Flowers are a balm to our spirit. Even in the midst of difficult circumstances their beauty, smell, and meaning conjure up memories and a feeling of delight. For patients recovering from surgery, having plants nearby has even been associated with reduced pain, lower blood pressure, and increased patient contentment. A patient’s environment of care can reduce the burden of disease.
The focus within hospice care is not on cure but on relieving symptoms and on creating the conditions for quality of life as one nears the end of life. But for a hospice patient, plants and beauty play a role too in the overall environment. The world of a hospice patient is now a small room; their bed, hopefully a window, and a few personal belongings. A vase of flowers adds significance to that world and can awaken memories and conversations, even amongst family members and hospice staff, contributing to an environment of care, meaning making and gratitude. They are a balm.
The feedback from our hospice deliveries this past year was nothing but gratitude! Little Sparrow was able to deliver over a hundred bouquets to patients, family members and even hospice staff. This was a huge grace to many who are experiencing grief, but also for those experiencing the challenge of care taking during what has been a difficult few years within the health care sector. We hope to offer the same gift of flowers this coming 2023 season.
Similar to last season, Little Sparrow will continue its’ relationship with Transitions Life Care delivering flowers to their team of volunteers to distribute out to patients and families. Some patients are on hospice for a day, others for a week, and many even months. Our hope is to alleviate burden and invoke a ray of light through this small gesture and we welcome your support, once again.
